The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America recognizes the role of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA) as being essential to our growth, structure, and continued success within the construction industry.

Equity

Equity is fairness for all workers; making adjustments and removing barriers that disadvantage some workers over others. Equity is different than treating people equally, it means recognizing that all workers are not starting from the same place, and making adjustments for individuals to create fairness among all workers.

Diversity

Diversity is the range of visible and non-visible qualities, experiences, and identities that shape who we are, how we think, and how we engage with and are perceived by the world. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical or mental disabilities, religious/spiritual beliefs, or political ideologies. They can also include differences such as personality, style, capabilities, thoughts and perspectives.

Inclusion

Inclusion is recognizing, welcoming and making space for diversity. An inclusive organization capitalizes on the diversity of ideas, experiences, skills and talents of all employees and provides equal access to opportunities for workers who might otherwise be excluded.

Accessibility

Accessibility is a fundamental concept that is essential for breaking down obstacles
and ensuring that people with different visual, motor, hearing, learning, and cognitive
abilities can fully participate in all aspects of life. It means creating spaces, services,
and products in a way that welcomes and accommodates individuals with diverse
abilities from the very beginning.

Accessibility is a fundamental concept that’s essential for breaking down obstacles and ensuring that people with different visual, motor, hearing, learning, and cognitive abilities can fully participate in all aspects of life. It means creating spaces, services, and products in a way that welcomes and accommodates individuals with diverse abilities from the very beginning.

Award Categories

Nominate a UBC member and/or Employer who you feel deserves to be recognized for their outstanding efforts towards making our environment equitable and inclusive for all workers. You may nominate a maximum of 1 person for each of the following categories:

Award Categories

1. Mentee

Demonstrates extraordinary efforts to raise awareness and consciousness about equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in the community, workplace, and/or Local union;
Goes beyond their general work duties to actively promote a work environment that is welcoming, supportive and nurturing of cultural, ethnic, racial, class, gender, sexual orientation, language and other human differences;
Goes beyond their general work duties to support and motivate others through peer-to-peer mentoring to overcome barriers and challenges relating to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in the workplace.

2. Mentor

Demonstrates extraordinary efforts to raise awareness and consciousness about equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in the community, workplace, and/or Local union;
Goes beyond their general work duties to actively promote a work environment that is welcoming, supportive and nurturing of cultural, ethnic, racial, class, gender, sexual orientation, language and other human differences;
Goes beyond their general work duties to mentor and support others to overcome barriers and challenges relating to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in the workplace.

3. Employer

Demonstrates exceptional leadership and extraordinary efforts to ensure underrepresented groups are accessing and succeeding in the skilled trades;
Promotes and fosters diversity programs such as mentoring, support networks, diversity training, or other opportunities that aim to improve diversity and inclusion in their workplace and among leadership;
Establishes an environment that recognizes and encourages the effective use of each individual’s talents and other contributions to the cause of diversity.
Demonstrates a corporate commitment whereby diversity and inclusion are part of the strategic plan and/or business plan, including a broader approach that includes suppliers and sub-contractors
Provides diversity and inclusion training for management and leadership
Demonstrates a diverse workforce at all company levels
Makes a targeted effort to attract and retain employees from diverse populations
Provides flexible work arrangements or creative benefits designed to meet the needs of diverse employees
Demonstrates collaboration or partnerships with equity seeking organizations
Fosters Mentor-Mentee relationships
Provides business leader shadowing to support mentorship and career advancement

4. Employer – UBC Apprentice
Service Program

Provides employment opportunities for new apprentice(s) under the UBC Apprentice Service Program;
Promotes and fosters support programs for new apprentices such as mentoring, support networks, diversity training, or other opportunities that aim to improve diversity and inclusion in their workplace;
Provides diversity and inclusion training for management and leadership;
Makes a targeted effort to attract and retain employees from equity deserving groups;
Supports and encourages learning on the job;
Provides flexible work arrangements or creative benefits designed to meet the diverse needs of apprentices;
Establishes an environment that recognizes and encourages the effective use of each individual’s talents and other contributions to the cause of diversity.

Nominee must be designated as a “Mentor” by their affiliated Regional Council
Nominee must demonstrate a leadership role that encourages, supports and promotes equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in the workplace

Mentee

Nominee must be a UBC member in good standing;
Nominee must not be a previous recipient of this award;
Nominee must not be a staff member of the UBC Canadian District Office;
Nominee must be designated as a “Mentee” by their affiliated Regional Council
Nominee must demonstrate activities that encourages, supports and promotes equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in the workplace

Employer

Nominee must not be a previous recipient of this award;
Must be a signatory employer; or partner on a UBC initiative
Must demonstrate actions to support the recruitment and retention of workers from equity-deserving groups such as women, indigenous, black, youth, persons of colour, newcomer, immigrant, temporary foreign worker, LGBTQ+, and persons with disabilities.
